Justify Wins Kentucky DerbyJustify did it!

Up until yesterday, no horse had won the Kentucky Derby without racing at the age of 2 since Apollo did it way back in 1882. Justify and trainer Bob Baffert now have their sights set on the elusive “The Triple Crown.” Throughout history (as of May 2018) only only twelve horses have won horseracing’s crown’s jewel. Bob Baffert knows all too well about what it takes to capture a Triple Crown as he did it with American Pharoah in 2015 breaking a 37-year drought.  For Baffert, this year’s derby win marks the 5th in remarkable career.

The rain-soaked 144th running of Kentucky Derby didn’t slow down the horse’s bid for greatness winning over a 20 horse field by 2.5 lengths. The unfavorable weather didn’t put a damper on the 1.4 million dollar payday. Over 3 inches of rain in total fell over this years “Run for the Roses “making 2018 the wettest on record.

Justify was ridden by 52 year old Jockey Mike Smith who was indeed aware of the curse of Apollo. The two-time derby winner Smith believed and proved that Justify would be the horse that would finally put the 136-year curse to rest.

Justify who was undefeated in three career starts coming into the race was a 5-2 favorite to win the Kentucky Derby. The win makes it six years straight where the overall favorite has won the Kentucky Derby making it the longest streak in this sports history.
